The methodology to bring reforms in the distribution of power supply has to be developed in consultation with various stakeholders of the city. The Engineering Department, Chandigarh Administration is responsible for supply of electricity in U.T., Chandigarh. As of now almost all the area getting sufficient power supply throughout the day, but still there is some of the shadow area in which power supply is problematic. Therefore, Chandigarh Administration would welcome ideas, views, opinions and suggestions from all its residents so that objective of 24x7 quality, reliable and affordable electricity for all could be achieved.

One of the Electricity officer says that to bring power from one transformer to another transformer, only high tension 11000 Volts cable line can be used, indifference to what capacity of power is being transferred. So if we change the cable as per power requirement, then many obstacles for bulk electricity consumer can be eased. We may also save some power in this way.

Work from home is another way to conserve energy. Encourage such industries or service providers who look for such options. It provides job opportunities to Chd youths, lesser vehicles on road, less power requirements, etc. It is an age of computer & networking, UT may hv to go in for building WiFi infrastructure.

UT should come out with out of box approach for energy conservation, like making passive solar blg which heats the room during winter & rejects heat during summers like for e-sampraks kiosks etc. Encourage use of LED lamps, run a compaign to educate residents. Architectural design buildings for usage of thermal insulation, thermal mass & shading which allows less consumption of energy for cooling & heating as well. For existing buildings retrofitting to be designed by Chd engineering Dept.

As mentioned earlier also, UT may consider installing smart card electronic energy in regular sectors and in rehabilitation colonies fixed charge electronic energy meters. Meter reading, billing & payment hassales are avoided. Some reputed mfrs are into smart card electronic meters while fixed electronic meters can easy be developed, it is in practice in many countries including South Africa. Recharging of smart card can be done at e-sampraks.

See if you can use white coal in thermal power plants. This will not only create tremendous potential employment opportunities. India has more than 750 MMT of renewable agri waste. If it can produce at least 100 MMT white coal lot of foreign exchange can be saved.

To ensure 24x7 clean power supply, UT may hv to consider making all the power cables underground in the residential areas. Install good quality LED lamps for street & park lights in residential areas and in traffic signals throughout city which can be solar operated. Encourage construction companies including CHB to design buildings & residents using natural lights by providing domes in the centre or common areas to reduce light load requirements of the blg. Green concept practiced throut world.
