In Botswana there is an Ipelegeng Programme. This programme is aimed at short term employment whilst at the same time carrying out essential development projects(Primarily Cleaning Projects) that have been identified and prioritized by the government which is usually done by semi-skilled and unskilled labour. India can adopt the same principle and use the unskilled labour force to clean cities & villages. An effective method that solves employment issue and cleans the country also.

Dustbins should be installed at every public and commercial area. Last time I went to India, the dustbins in railway station/bus stands were very few and trash was over following. To start the change install dustbins and have to make sure the trash is removed in timely manner.

In London council , similar to Municipality in India collects rubbish on weekly basis . Every area according to the post code is allocated collection day . Council has provided every house different bags and boxes for recycling . Cans, tins, plastic bottles etc to be rinsed thoroughly and placed in relevant box for collection. Same with cardboards and garden waste. I believe if contribute towards recycling , money can be used wisely for other purpose. Ideas should be finalised and implemented soon

I have attached some best practices, suggestions from my experience in living in City of London. They focus around public/corporate/government responsibility, educating people, rules and most importantly enforcing rules. I agree with Sangamitra here, the same thing was followed in Switzerland. Every locality had this trash bin specifically identified for Glass, metal,Paper. There were two common trash for household waste one for general waste and other for biodegradable. Batteries going into any of this bins was a big NO NO. Atleast at major locations such as at big shops, Malls, Railway stations, Certain Bus stops there should be specific trash containers identified for collecting harmful trash like batteries.

When it comes to making India Green, we should adopt reduce-recycle and reuse slogan vigrously. scholl childrens should be taught about benefits of recylement, in singapore right from tissue papers to office use papers are made up of recycled paper. India must have more and more paper recycle treatment facilities in districts, students must join in collecting waste paper and taking them to recyle treatment facility, i have seen students doing that in singapore.

We should bring in Corporate houses to partner with Govt. to own up cleanliness for a town / city / village and bring incentives in terms of tax breaks, etc. The levels of accountability and meritocracy in private enterprises will bring the massive change - if we can create a law like the CSR this can drive tangible results in a given period. We should atleast target 3000 cities and towns and villages in phase 1
