India stands at a crossroads in managing mass displacement and targeted migration from Bangladesh, Myanmar and Pakistan. The challenges are multifaceted -historical, demographic, legal, security and humanitarian. While India has demonstrated resilience and compassion in hosting refugees, the absence of a comprehensive legal framework and the politicization of migration threaten social cohesion and national security.
A balanced, rights-based and data-driven approach is essential. Short-term operational measures must be complemented by long-term structural reforms, including the enactment of a national refugee law, regional cooperation and investment in inclusion and adaptation. Stakeholder engagement and community participation are key to building trust and fostering sustainable solutions.By integrating historical lessons, legal principles and international best practices, India can navigate the complexities of migration, protect vulnerable populations and safeguard its demographics
