Madurai City is gearing up for Round 2 of Smart City Challenge. In Round 1 of this challenge, Madurai was ranked 28 out of 100. Madurai narrowly missed the opportunity to make it to the first list and this time the Madurai Municipal Corporation (MMC) is leaving no stone unturned to see Madurai in the next round of Smart cities.

Madurai Corporation is currently working with all the stake holders to revise and strengthen its Smart City proposal. The most crucial inputs for revising and strengthening the current proposal will have to come from the citizens of Madurai. Citizens engagement and feedback will help us in identifying priority areas and also pinpoint the drawbacks in the current proposal.

The current proposal has two Components-Area based Development and Pan city proposal

a) Area Based Development: Madurai Corporation has selected 3100 Acres around the Meenakshi Temple precinct for Retrofitting.

Some of the key components are:

1) Heritage preservation and Enhancement
2) Visitors Amenities and Tourism infrastructure
3) IT integration for aiding Tourists and Citizens
4) Improving Urban infrastructure

b) Pan City Proposal: This proposal includes pan city smart solutions for the benefit of the entire city by using ICT and thereby improving governance and delivery of public services. This envisages developing an integrated City Management and Control Centre (ICMCC) with the following components

1) Smart Water and Sewerage Management System
2) Intelligent Public Transport, Parking and Traffic Control Systems
3) Street Light Monitoring and Management system
4) Emergency Response and Surveillance system
5) Waste Collection and Transportation Monitoring system
6) Integrated platform for E-governance

MMC is requesting all the stakeholders to offer their valuable suggestions and comments to improve the current proposal.

"இந்தி வேண்டவே வேண்டாம்" - "திறனூர்கள்" என்ற பெயரில், மதுரையின் முக்கு மூலைகளிலெல்லாம் இந்தியை புகுத்தவேண்டாம் எனக் கேட்டுக்கொள்கிறேன். "BIG NO to hindi in the City" - In the name of "Smart City" we dont need hindi to get injected into every nook and corner of Madurai. நன்றி. thanks.

Need more one way roads in the downtown area. Parking lots should be marked as 2 wheeler/ 4 wheeler areas. Parking lanes should be marked with paints so that public can park and take the vehicle without hindrance. Garbage disposal every 6 hours recommended. More hoarding and signs are recommended. Public areas such as Airport, Train Station, Bus Terminals, Temple, etc. can be enabled with free Wifi. Prepaid Auto & Taxi services also recommended. Tour guides can be licensed.

Eliminating corruption, Cleaning the city, Widening the roads, Better transport...THESE WONT MAKE MADURAI A SMART CITY! First people there should have the interest and must participate and coordinate with gov to make it a smart city.As Madurai is a temple city, culture is very important to be maintained. All those industries should be shifted away from the city and placed in the outer areas.
