Corporation of Chennai is preparing a proposal towards Smart City Challenge which would include city wide smart urban solutions as well as identification of areas within the city for its implementation.

The proposal would be defined primarily based on voice of Chennai residents. An extensive citizen engagement programme is established by Corporation of Chennai to document the views and concernsfor the same.

Residents may post their opinion and ideas on civic services such as transport, parking, water supply, sanitation, energy, housing, IT solutions, health, education, safety and security. Your views, opinion and solutions on urban issues faced by Chennai would not only support a better tomorrow for Chennaites, it will also make Chennai a strong contender for getting shortlisted as one of the first 20 cities in India to implement Smart City Solutions in Phase 1.

Chennai citizen and community is its biggest strength. Let’s participate to make this proposal inclusive and meaningful for every common man, every citizen.

Six types of investments are required immediately for achieving green smart cities, and thus ensuring the long-term survival of the urban environment: (i) low-carbon transport systems; (ii) a green industrial sector; (iii) energy-efficient buildings; (iv) greening of the city itself; (v) green, resilient infrastructure; and (vi) intelligent systems

Specific measures for reducing the amount of waste generated by rapid urban growth have not been encouraging. These measures include encouraging the burning of clean coal, substitution of natural gas for other fuels, and use of public transport, as well as subsidies that reward environmentally responsible behavior.

Immediate measures are (i) lowering the rate at which buildings consume energy, both during construction and operation and maintenance; (ii) encouraging use of lowcarbon forms of transport; and (iii) adopting low-carbon means of energy production.

Cities should be provided with the capacity and incentive to plan, finance, and implement needed infrastructure that forms the basis for innovation appropriate to the competitive advantages of the city and its rural hinterland. And enable the private sector to participate effectively in this process, leveraging government resources.

The bus rapid transit system is integrated with the city’s metro system and other nonmotorized means of transport is a good one. It is also integrated with the planning and zoning of surrounding areas to foster a dense, pedestrian-friendly environment which allows easy access to services and employment.

Existing cities need to change as they grow. In particular, to maximize livability and minimize energy use and environmental impact, cities need to align the planning and provision of quality, high-capacity public transport with the provision of well-serviced high density, mixed-use development.

Dear Sir, In order to make Chennai smart city, I suggest the following: 1) Road network needs to be improved. 2) Water distribution through lorries to be converted distribution by pipelines. 3) Shopping malls / Cinema halls needs to be away from residential areas to avoid traffic jams and accidents. 4) Road maintenance to be through agency for accountability. 5) Like Andhra Pradesh the efforts made to build smart city, we need proper planning through experts.
